Opera Scenes

Role: Set and Costume Designer
Date: November 2024
Location: Richard Burton Theatre, Cardiff

A selection of scenes from 10 different operas put togethger to showcase the talents of the David Seligman Opera School. Our aim throughout this production was to create a space that easily adapted to the different themes of each scene, creating unique worlds to ground each song. Using the everchanging landscape of the 1960's we went from darker moodier themes of the earlier scenes, which included Britten's 'Turn of the screw'. Using a lot of earthier tones and more conservative dress to replicate the early 60's, we slowly transitioned the set and costume to more of a psychadelic aesthetic with more fun carefree colours and dress. This helped when moving into scenes such as Strauss's 'Die Fledermaus' as that world is vastly different than the earlier scenes. We kept the set minimum to accomodate an easily changable, accessible space allowing us to shrink or expand the space when necessary.
